Sitting some 10,500 feet above sea level, Chief Lake is near the top of Silver Pass in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California.
After backpacking for 10 days along the John Muir Trail, Kip created this image while camped at the lake. After sitting through a 2-hour thunderstorm, Kip emerged from his tent with his medium format camera to find a wonderful display of light reflecting off the lake and jagged peaks. Working quickly, he framed “Chief Lake” as the last remaining rays of light dropped below the horizon.
